History
In 1998 a first TE initiative at the K.U.Leuven was taken by the set-up of an interdisciplinary discussion group called ‘Tissue Engineering Interest Group’, bringing together researchers from medical and engineering sciences. This resulte10-02-2012.U.Leuven - IDO). In 2003 a major step was taken for the development of TE as a core research competence in Flanders by the Guided Bone Engineering project (GBOU-IWT), www.tissue-engineering.be, bringing together key players in Flanders (KULeuven, UGent & VITO). By the appointment of Dr. Jan Schrooten as Industrial Research Fellow (IOF) for Biomaterials & Tissue Engineering in 2005 a coordinative action for the development of a skeletal TE-program was taken at the K.U.Leuven. This resulted in new research projects and in November 2006 Prometheus was founded as a platform to facilitate interdisciplinary research focusing on skeletal TE. With the creation of Prometheus, a large and ambitious interdisciplinary academic initiative for skeletal TE is established that will contribute to the scientific and technological know-how in Flanders and will also facilitate the (inter)national awareness.
