Research is aimed towards non-metallic materials, namely fibre-reinforced plastics (or polymer matrix composites), ceramics and ceramic matrix composites.

Research in polymer matrix composites (link) started in 1982. During the first, exploratory years, many different research topics were covered, but gradually, the attention has been focused on four main areas: use of advanced textiles in composites, processing optimisation and it's influence on composite properties, sandwich structures and environment friendly composites. In all of these four areas, development of predictive models has become crucial.

Research on ceramics (link) started in 1988. At present, research is mainly focused on three main areas: Synthesis and processing of ceramic materials, functional properties of ceramics, and modelling of processing and behaviour of ceramics.

Our researchers are also active in the Leuven Materials Reseach Centre (MRC)
