The activities of this research group are focussed on the understanding
and modelling of microstructural developments, crystallographic texture
evolution and mechanical behaviour of metallic materials during and
after plastic deformation. Although the main interest is focused on
hot and cold rolling, wire drawing, extrusion and sheet metal forming,
the scientific and experimental expertise of the group can also be used
for the analysis of other deformation processes. Special efforts are
given to the study of the microstructural evolution during deformation
of metals. That microstructural information is as much as possible taken
into account in the modelling of forming operations. Last but not least
the close interaction with the research group "Advanced Alloys
and Production Processes" must be mentioned.
Research topics:
- Crystallographic texture and residual stresses:
experimental methods based on X-ray diffraction and automated electron
backscattering diffraction (OIM), quantitative texture analysis (ODF);
measurement and modelling of residual stress in thin layers, wires
and fibre reinforced composites.
(Paul Van Houtte; B. Verlinden, Marc Seefeldt, Gijs Langelaan,
Yerra Sampath Kumar, Xiaohua Hu, Shen He)
- Thermo-mechanical processing: recrystallization
and grain growth, precipitation hardening, superplasticity, submicron
materials
(Bert Verlinden, Stijn Poortmans, Joke De Messemaeker, Mathieu
Vanderhasten, Miljana Popovic)
- Finite element methods: modelling of
large plastic deformation of anisotropic materials (sheet metal forming,
wire drawing); modelling of work hardening and softening for monotonic
loading and strain path changes
(Paul Van Houtte, Albert Van Bael, Shen He, Yerra Sampath Kumar)
- Micromechanics of polycrystalline materials:
development of a "fast" model, which can make accurate predictions
of deformation textures and flow stresses for metallic polycrystalline
materials used in forming operations.
(Paul Van Houtte, Etienne Aernoudt, Marc Seefelt, Xiahua Hu, Steven
Van Boxel)
- Development of advanced steel alloys:
(Etienne Aernoudt, Paul Van Houtte, Artur Walentek, Xiaohua Hu)
